Barbados is a "heaven of tranquillity", says tourism minister

Barbados's minister of tourism has pledged to uphold the Caribbean island's image as a "heaven of tranquility" well into 2012 and beyond.

Taking to Independent.co.uk to promote the Caribbean's most "exciting and colourful island", Richard Sealy said that the year ahead looks set to be a year of possibilities.

He reinforced his determination to make it the most idyllic, exquisite resort in the world, citing such attractions as the elegant plantation houses and dense pockets of tropical lush greenery.

Even if this isn't enough, he recommended visitors "rent a car or Mini Moke and take a drive over to the east of the island for sweeping views of the dramatic Atlantic coast, just a few miles from the glamour of the west and south yet seemingly a different world."

However, it's not all about relaxing; as for those who have got the energy, there's always the opportunity to go on a rainforest zip wire, or an island safari. Those with a penchant for golf won't be disappointed either, the minister insisted confidently.

The Caribbean island certainly looks set to have the bumper year that Mr Sealy is hoping for; particularly when members of the press are similarly singing the destination's praises.

Mirror.co.uk's Natalie Edwards, for example, wrote back in December, that with all the island's elegance and beauty, it's no wonder that celebs like Simon Cowell or Wayne Rooney all return to the Platinum Coast like "boomerangs".

If Mr Sealy was to dispense one piece of advice to new tourists this year, it would be that they should attempt to spark up conversation wherever possible -  in a sensible fashion.

"One thing we encourage all visitors to do is engage with the people of Barbados, who are gregarious, amusing and proud of their island," he wrote.

"They are especially pleased if you ask them for some advice, although you must allow for such a conversation turning into a lengthy discussion!"
